These comprise of sun or age spots and are treated with laser therapy. Strong pulses of lighted produced by the laser are absorbed by the melanin pigment in the lesion. The pigment is heated and is removed by skin renewal. Over the following weeks the pigmented area gradually flakes away from the skin leaving little trace of the original mark.
Almost everyone can be treated except those with very dark skin or tanned individuals.
Most describe the discomfort as acceptable. No anaesthesia is required. Sensations vary but most people describe it as a very short hot pin prick.
Redness and slight warming are normal after treatment, this usually disappears after a few hours. The lesions will darken after treatment and may appear more obvious at first but gradually the marks will 'flake' away.
