Laser Light Treatment in Use

How Do Cosmetic Laser
   Treatments Work

Introduction

Doctors have been using lasers and light treatment in dermatology for over 20 years. At The Beacon Clinic we use the very best modern, safe laser technology to successfully treat a variety of skin conditions.

Lasers produce a single, concentrated beam of pure light. This is precisely adjusted according to the skin condition being treated. The light energy is applied to the area in a series of extremely short pulses, and is taken up by the lesion being treated, which destroys it. Normal skin in the area does not absorb the same amount of energy, and so is unaffected. This means that laser treatment is extremely precise, so minimising side effects to normal skin.

How is the treatment carried out ?

Protective eyewear is worn by you and the doctor, in accordance with our strict safety standards.

A short pulse of light is released, then the applicator is moved to the neighbouring area of skin. This is repeated until the entire area has been treated.

How does the treatment feel ?

Most people feel a little discomfort-like a very short hot pinprick, which they describe as acceptable. No painkillers / anaesthesia is required.

Are there any side effects ?

The skin can become a bit red immediately after treatment; however most patients experience no side effects, and any skin reaction usually disappears within a few hours.

How long does each treatment take ?

Laser treatment for single small lesions is very quick, taking only a few minutes. At the other extreme, hair removal over large area e.g. back can take 1-2 hours

How many treatments will I need ?

This varies greatly, depending on the skin problem being treated. Hair removal for example, typically takes about 6 treatments. A small blemish can be treated with just one session.

How much does a course of treatment cost ?

During your consultation, the doctor will fully assess the condition to be treated. A treatment programme tailored to your individual needs will be discussed with you, so that you know exactly what is involved, what to expect and how much it will cost.
