Botox smoothes facial lines and wrinkles by reversibly weakening the muscles that cause frowning. This also prevents new wrinkles being formed as the treated muscles cannot contract into the expressions that contribute to wrinkling.
A series of tiny injections are administered directly into the muscles. Although the injections are not painful, an anaesthetic cream may be applied to the skin to numb the area prior to injection. Discomfort is minimal and brief. Most people compare the sensation to a skin prick. You may resume normal activity immediately.
In general reactions occur within the first week following injection and are usually shortlived. These may involve mild tenderness and minimal bruising associated with the injection sites. The doctors are trained how to dose and inject Botox so that these effects are minimised.
A marked improvement can be expected in moderate to severe lines within days, lasting up to six months. Individual responses do vary. The treatment can be repeated every 3-6 months to maintain a smooth, wrinkle free and younger look.
